Caroline Wozniacki converted just five of 14 break points on the way to defeat
World number one Caroline Wozniacki was knocked out of the third round of the WTA Tour Pan Pacific Open with a three-set defeat to Estonian Kaia Kanepi.
Kanepi, ranked 43 in the world, stunned Wozniacki with a 7-5 1-6 6-4 victory in Tokyo.
Wozniacki, 21, was the reigning champion and playing her first tournament since losing in the US Open semi-finals two weeks ago.
It was unseeded Kanepi’s first win over Wozniacki in three attempts.
Wozniacki is without a tournament victory since winning the Danish Open in June.

Laura Robson was defeated in straight sets to Ana Ivanovic in Tokyo
Laura Robson has been beaten in straight sets at the Pacific Open in Tokyo by Ana Ivanovic.
Former world number one Ivanovic won the second-round match 7-5 6-4.
A sluggish Ivanovic struggled to hold on to her opening service game but recovered to break Robson in the 12th game and seal the set 7-5.

Federer last won a major title at the Australian Open in 2010
Roger Federer has pulled out of next month’s Shanghai Masters to “rest and recuperate” after a gruelling summer.
The 16-times Grand Slam champion suffered a five-set loss to Novak Djokovic in the US Open semi-finals at Flushing Meadows earlier this month.
Federer then travelled to Australia to aid Switzerland’s return to the Davis Cup World Group.
“I have some nagging injuries that I need to address,” the world number three told the ATP official website.

Navratilova says the modern game is more demanding on players’ bodies
Martina Navratilova has defended Andy Murray after he said players are not afraid of striking over their crowded schedule.
The 18-time Grand Slam singles champion agrees that players should consider action because of the packed calendar.

Former world number two Michael Stich has criticised suggestions from Andy Murray that tennis players could strike over what they consider to be an overcrowded schedule.
“These tournaments provide them with jobs and an income,” the 1991 Wimbledon champion told BBC Radio 5 live.
