I'm afraid to try out for my school's sports teams?

September 4th, 2010

I've never really participated in sports as a child, which I regret greatly because many kids I know have been actively engaged in various sports ever since they were little and so are great at them now. Only last year, I timidly joined my high school's lacrosse team as my first ever team sport experience, but I got deflated and even more uncertain about my athletic abilities. Everybody was better than me and were all friends with each other while I was left alone all by myself. The coaches turned condescending soon after they saw that my self-esteem was low and that I didn't exactly have any particular skill for them to use me in the game fields. I quickly gave up and it's become such a horrible memory to me. Now the new school year is coming up and I'm afraid to try out for tennis (I've been going to tennis camps during this summer even though it's the first time I'm playing) or field hockey (my mom suggests me joining the freshman FH team since our school doesn't have freshman tennis and I won't make JV.) What should I do? I don't wanna be humiliated if I ever join a sports team but I still like playing tennis and would like to try new sports like field hockey.
Oh, I'm going into ninth grade this year. Sorry, I played lacrosse in middle school, that was a typo.

Norwich chief executive David McNally insists his club are on a firm footing despite Grant Holt’s request to leave Carrow Road.

The 31-year-old talisman’s transfer request was rejected by the Canaries on Friday following a superb first season in the Premier League, following speculation linking Norwich manager Paul Lambert with vacant positions elsewhere.

However, chief executive McNally took to Twitter on Saturday in a bid to calm supporters about the club’s future.

“We did receive a transfer request from Grant Holt yesterday [Friday]. It was rejected immediately,” McNally said.

“At our club, we deal with the out-of-contract players first of all when each season ends.

“We then deal with players where the club may have an option to extend their contracts. This season, there are several in this category.

Spain’s Rafael Nadal eased into the final of the Italian Open with a straight-sets 7-6 (8-6) 6-0 victory against David Ferrer in Rome.

Nadal was made to work hard in the opening set by a battling Ferrer.

But once he took it in the tie-break, he did not allow his compatriot a route back into the match and wrapped up the second set without dropping a game.

Nadal will meet either Roger Federer or Novak Djokovic, who meet in Saturday’s other semi-final.

England’s Richard Finch shocked German world number nine Martin Kaymer to advance to the last 16 of the World Match Play at Finca Cortesin, Spain.

Finch, ranked 218 in the world, recorded a one-hole win over the number one seed to become the seventh UK player to reach the second round.

Ian Poulter, Tom Lewis, Graeme McDowell, Paul Lawrie, Robert Rock and Justin Rose are all through.

But Open champion Darren Clarke has gone out.

Clarke, who has failed to survive a halfway cut this season, lost twice on Friday, by two holes to Rock and 64 to Rose.

In the morning session, Lewis’s one-hole win over John Senden secured his and defending champion Poulter’s… Continue reading Finch shocks Kaymer at Match Play

Well, first of all, you’ll be a sophomore, correct? If so, you won’t be eligible for your field hockey’s freshman team. Unless of course, you’re in a different state than me and it’s run differently.

Depending on where you live (west coast or east coast), field hockey can be a great sport to start in high school. Most people on the east coast have been playing field hockey throughout their childhood. On the west coast, most people don’t start playing until their freshman or sophomore year.

To be honest, if I were in your situation, I wouldn’t play a sport that requires specific skills that your peers have gained over the years, such as tennis. I have nothing against tennis; it’s just that everyone will have much more experience than you. Normally, I would suggest sports like cross country, track, dive, swim, and field hockey because they’re very easy to pick up on compared to sports like tennis, basketball, baseball/softball, and volleyball.

Also, don’t worry about humiliating yourself. I know, that’s easier said than done. You just have to go out there, focus on your goal, work your heart out, and show the coach your commitment to the team. If you can do that, you deserve a spot on the team. If you don’t make it or whatever, at least you can honestly say you tried your hardest.

Don’t sweat it. Whenever i was in middle school, i really wanted to try out for soccer (i’d never been on a team.), but i was afraid of everyone Else’s skill level compared to mine, and it was out of 100 people trying out, and only like 25 people would be drawn. So, i ended up trying out and i got picked, as it turned out i was actually really good at soccer, and i loved it, but i just didn’t have the time to spare, so i finished up the year and didn’t do it again.
    Go for it (:

Sometimes teachers and coaches can be even bigger bullies than the other students. Why not try to find a sport to play thats not at school? It might be a little harder to find a place to play tennis. But its not impossible. My school dosn’t offer tennis. But there was a college in my area that did tennis lessons to kids and teens. So I played there for a while
I don’t do tennis anymore, but I’m currently doing TaeKwonDo, gymnastics, and kickboxing. None of those are at my school.

If you want to try a new sport, martial arts may be a good option for you. It shouldn’t be that hard to find a TaeKwonDo or Karate studio. Its a lot of fun! And martial arts teach integrity and respect. So its good and positive environment to work out in.

There are plenty of sports you can play without playing them at school. Just do some searching.
